2009 MERRIE MONARCH (April 12 - 18)

Merrie Monarch is the olympics of Hula, an international event that brings Hula groups from all over the world to Hilo. It is an enhanting time to be in Hilo and we are very excited about our second Merrie Monarch; last year's week long activities were beyond our wildest imagination. We plan to attend as many events as possible.

Below is a list of the Merrie Monarch events for the 2009 season. This site has pictures and videos of the events we attended.

Sunday April 12:

Ho'olaulea (music festival) 10AM to 5PM at the Hilo Afook-Chinen Civic Center
  • 10 a.m. -- Unukupukupu, kumu Taupori Tangaro
  • 11 a.m. -- Haelau Nae Pua O Uluhaimalama, kumu Emery Aceret
  • Noon -- Haelau Ka Ua Kani Lehua, kumu Johnny Lum Ho
  • 1 p.m. -- Haelau O Ke 'Aenuenue, kumu Glenn Vasconcellos
  • 2 p.m. -- Lori Lei's Hula Studio & Wai'ohinu Hula Studio, kumu Lori Lei Shirakawa
