2010 MERRIE MONARCH (April 4 - 10)

The 2010 Merrie Monarch, an international Hula competition in Hilo, started with the Ho'olaulea on Easter Day at the Civic Auditorium. Events were held around the town during the week to allow visitors and locals to experience the beauty of Hula dance and hear the wonderful melodies and chants. Below is a list of the 2010 Merrie Monarch events that occured.

Sunday April 4:

  • Merrie Monarch Festival Free Workshop: Hawaiian scholar Hiapo Perreira will give an overview of the traditional stories of Keaomelemeleho. He has been studying and researching the stories with students of Ke Kula'o Nawahiokalani'opu'u Iki and will present his knowledge in both Hawaiian and English - 10:00-11:30AM 'Imiloa Astronomy Center
  • Hula Free Demonstration : Halau O Kawananakoa - Kumu Alberta Nicolas - Noon Hawaii Naniloa Volcanoes Resort
  • Hula Free Demonstration : Halau Kahula O Na Mamo O Mo'ikeha - Kumu Tania Mo'ikena - 1:00PM Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
  • Merrie Monarch Festival Free Workshops Students from the Hawaiian language immersion school Ke Kula'o Nawahiokalani'opu'u Iki under the guidance of kumu Ha'amauliola Aionawill will perform the Keaomelemele story in Hawaiian (English printed translation will be available). - 1:00-2:30PM 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.

  • Hawaiian Invitational Arts & Crafts Fair: 8:30AM to 5:00PM - Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium
  • Merrie Monarch Festival Free Workshops: Kumu hula Leina'ala Kalama Heine will showcase life lessons taught within the story of Keaomelemele highlighting elemental connections, genealogical ties, and hula traditions. The workshop will include a performance by her Halau Na Pualei O Likolehua. - 10:00-11:30PM 'Imiloa Astronomy Center
  • Hula Free Demonstration : Ke Ola O Na Kupuna - Kumu Haunani Medeiros - 11:00AM Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium

  • Merrie Monarch Festival Free Workshops: A panel of former "Miss Aloha Hula" from Halau O Ka Ua Kani Lehua will discuss their experiences in working with the innovative kumu hula Johnny Lum Ho. The panel will be moderated by Kawelo Kong Kee - 1:00-2:30PM 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.

  • Merrie Monarch Festival Free Workshops Award-winning composer, performer and producer Kenneth Makuakane and assistant professor Keola Donaghy will discuss their experiences with collaboration in contemporary Hawaiian language and music composition- 10:00-11:30AM 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.
  • Hula Free Demonstration : Kou Lima Nani E - Kumu Iwalani Kalima - Noon Naniloa Volcanoes Resort
  • Hula Free Demonstration : Free Church of Tonga, Seone Katona & Mafua Lavema - 1:00PM Hilo Hawaiian Hotel

  • Kumu hula Nani Lim Yap will lead a workshop on the basic movements of a simple hula. Nani Lim Yap is a gifted singer, hula dancer, 'ukulele player, and one of the kumu hula for the award winning halau, Na Lei O Kaholoku.
